Mitsubishi is focusing on a new family of crossover and SUV models, many of which will be either hybrid or electric.

Revealing the plan to Autocar, Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko confirmed that by 2020, the Japanese automaker will launch a five-tier lineup of crossovers and SUVs, four of which will likely be electrified as plug-in hybrids or all-electric vehicles. The lineup will cover mostly every segment starting with above the B-segment and topping out with the Shogun, known as the Montero in the U.S. According to Masuko, the next ASX will likely be the world’s smallest all-electric SUV. The company will preview that model with the eX concept (seen above) at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

To fill out the rest of the lineup, Mitsubishi will move the Outlander upmarket, making it larger in order to slot an all-new model between the ASX and Outlander. Bringing the gap between the Outlander and the Shogun will be a Shogun Sport that is being described as “a conventionally powered pure off-roader.” Although no final decisions have been made, expect the all-new model, Outlander and Shogun to be plug-in hybrids.

Mitsubishi has made it clear in recent years that it will focus on electrified vehicles, forgoing performance models with the Lancer Evolution getting axed as proof.
