Mitsubishi really is going all-in on crossovers and SUVs.
If you’re one of the few remaining Mitsubishi enthusiasts that still have hope the automaker will create another sports sedan, it’s probably time to give up. According to a recent report from Auto Express, the Lancer nameplate will become a crossover, as Mitsubishi continues getting rid of its traditional cars. The new Lancer will be a C-segment offering, likely aimed at models like the Toyota C-HR and Nissan Juke.

Mitsubishi’s chief designer, Tsunehiro Kunimoto, said the design direction previewed by the e-Evolution concept would be ideal for a smaller vehicle. “Just because it’s C-segment doesn’t mean it has to be a very convention hatchback,” said Kunimoto. He admits the automaker is “thinking quite radically” and might even create a new type of hatchback vehicle.
Unfortunately to us, it all sounds like the Lancer is coming back as a compact crossover, which really shouldn’t come as a surprise given the direction Mitsubishi is taking.
