One of Mitsubishi‘s long-standing sports cars, the next-generation Evolution model will be built to compete with Japan’s finest.

Automotive enthusiasts have been waiting a long time for the next-generation Evolution model, and it may live up to expectations when it’s finally unveiled. Latest reports have the new Evolution to be a plug-in hybrid with around 500 hp, enough performance to even take on the Nissan GT-R. Of course that’s a bold claim, considering the GT-R’s prestige and proven performance on and off the track, but the Lancer Evolution has been no slouch over the decades and the Japanese automaker is looking to return to that level of competition.

The next-generation Lancer hatchback is currently getting its finishing touches for a global launch next year while a plug-in hybrid variant is already in the product plan. Thanks to the technology developed for the MiEV Evolution II Pikes Peak race car, the new Evolution will benefit with a whole new world of performance. The result could be a high-end, all-wheel drive Evolution that gets the best of both worlds: performance and low emissions.

Of course there’s still the hurdle of how quickly North America will embrace the PHEV market, which will affect whether or not Mitsubishi moves forward with the plan.
