In an effort to help boost electric vehicle sales, Japanese automakers have teamed up to increase the number of charging stations in Japan.

Led by Nissan, the group of Japanese automakers plan to build an additional 12,000 charging stations, with 4,000 of those being fast-charging points. Other automakers involved in the project and helping share costs are Toyota, Honda, and Mitsubishi.

Though Japanese automakers have paved the way for electric vehicles, other automakers have jumped in including American automaker Tesla and German automaker BMW with its recently announced i3. While technology is getting better and some of the newer EVs have better range, the infrastructure still isn’t in place for electric vehicles to enjoy success.

The collaboration between the Japanese automakers hopes to address that issue, and as a result, hopes to increase the sales of their electric vehicles.
