Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) unveils three world premiere

Mitsubishi is bringing a trio of new concepts to the Tokyo Motor Show, all three of which feature some sort of electrified powertrain.

Styling on all three of the concepts is consistent, and foreshadows some of the cues that the brand’s production cars will use in the future.

In the middle of the above photo is the GC-PHEV Concept, a full-size SUV that features full-time four-wheel drive and gets its power from a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine mated to a high-output electric motor. The power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

On the right, Mitsubishi is teasing a compact SUV it calls the XR-PHEV. Power for this small crossover comes from a 1.1-liter direct-injection turbocharged motor and a lightweight, compact electric motor, and is sent to the front wheels.

Both the GC-PHEV and XR-PHEV use plug-in hybrid setups, while the last concept (seen on the left) uses a mild hybrid system. The Concept AR previews a next-generation MPV and also gets its power from a small 1.1-liter direct-injection turbocharged engine mated to a mild hybrid system.

Finally, all three feature Mitsubishi’s latest suite of safety technologies known as e-Assist, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation and lane departure warning.
