The Mitsubishi Evolution X will indeed see a successor but it’ll be so different that the Japanese automaker will be giving it a new nameplate.
While the next-generation Mitsubishi Lancer will be built on a Renault architecture, expect the Evo’s successor to take on a life of its own. So much so that you’ll see a sports car featuring plug-in hybrid EV technology built on a specially designed platform. Sources close to the project are saying that Mitsubishi is looking closely at an enhanced version of its 1.1-liter three-cylinder turbo engine found in the XR-PHEV concept that debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show.

Of course the Evo’s successor will feature a revised version of Mitsubishi’s Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC), a vehicle dynamics system that integrates management of the car’s Active Centre Differential, Active Yaw Control, Active Stability Control and Sports ABS. And of course it’ll be an AWD handling machine, featuring electric motors in the front and the rear, similar to the Outlander PHEV.
