Mitsubishi might not have its plug-in hybrid SUV initiative off the ground in North America yet, but the Japanese automaker has confirmed that more models are on their way.
At the launch of the Outlander PHEV in Australia, the Japanese automaker stated that the new plug-in hybrid SUV is “the beginning of a new era,” as the company will focus and invest more into hybrid technologies. Though the Outlander PHEV is Mitsubishi’s first model to be powered by the brand’s hybrid powertrain, the next-generation Pajero and ASX SUVs will also get hybrid variants. The Pajero is more commonly known as the Montero in North America.

Both those vehicles were previewed at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show in the form of the GC-PHEV and and XR-PHEV. Both production versions of the concepts will be powered by the PHEV systems displayed at the show. The GC-PHEV touted a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 hybrid powertrain while the XR-PHEV had a 1.1-liter turbocharged hybrid powertrain under the hood.
Previously, Mitsubishi President Osamu Masuko said he expects electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up 20 percent of the automaker’s output by 2020.
